Do dietary supplements or vitamin pills help prevent hair loss?
Almost every day there’s a new product released claiming to stimulate hair growth or stop it completely. The question always remains about how safe they are and if they actually work.
There are a huge range of vitamins and supplements available, each one making their own big claims. Despite these ‘miraculous’ cures, hair loss still exists and these magic pills haven’t had much of an effect. If you are vitamin deficient these vitamins do have their uses, but they will have no real effect on your hair. There have even been studies that have suggested the complete opposite. The intake of too much selenium or Vitaman A could actually damage your hair.
A simple blood test will be able to reveal if you are low on zinc, iron or vitamin D – three elements crucial to hair growth. If you get these back to normal levels they will improve both your health and potentially your hair density.
There are quite a number of supplements that feature Biotin, for example. As of yet, there has been no clinical trial that links it to preventing hair loss. You will also see omega-3, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin C, amino acis and B vitamins mentioned quite a lot too. But rather than buy costly hair-growth pills, you can find this in most standard vitamin supplements. As with Biotin, there is no link at all between their use and encouraging hair growth.
Does diet affect hair growth?
A good diet may offer help with your hair loss but most importantly, it helps sustain your body overall. That doesn’t mean you have to cut out all the nice treats you enjoy at times. As the saying goes, everything in moderation is fine. A well balanced diet that is healthier than not will only help your cause. Hair is comprised mostly of protein, but increasing this in your diet won’t have much of an effect. Similar to vitamin deficiency, increasing your intake will only help if your body is actually missing it.
What can you do to solve hair loss problems?
As much as we’d like to say the opposite, there are no magic cures available. The best thing to do is take care of your body through your diet and use treatments that make the most of what you have.
