US celebrity hairstylist faces lawsuit as his product appears to cause hair loss

Chas Dean

There has been consternation this week with the news that over 200 people have raised serious complaints against a hair product currently on the market in the US which apparently is causing hair loss issues among other side effects.

The hair product called WEN is central to the world of celebrity. It was developed by Chaz Dean who has a hair care studio in Hollywood and it has been endorsed by big names such as Brooke shields, Angie Harmon and Alyssa Milano. To give you an idea as to how big this product line has become in America, type “who is Chaz dean” into Google. At the top of the page you get one of Google’s own helpful information snippets:

Celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean has single-handedly transformed the beauty industry with his wildly successful WEN® Hair Care. The line has replaced detergents and sulfates in soap and shampoo with nourishing botanical ingredients that work wonders on even the most dry, damaged and frizzy hair.

If you go into his “About Chaz dean” page, you find info that suggests that he first began formulations for the product in 1993 and tested it for five years before he brought it onto the market. He goes onto say “Shampoos contain so many harmful ingredients from detergents, sulfates and surfactants that not only build up with continual use, but are simply bad for the scalp and hair.”

Now it seems this hard work and attention to detail is being thrown back in his face. Attorney Amy Davis who was representing the 200 plaintiffs said that the product does in fact trap dirt, oil and debris in the hair follicle itself and thus causes scalp irritation. Davis said in a report on the CBS Los Angeles website: “What we understand about the product and how it causes hair loss is it contains virtually no cleanser,” Davis said. “It’s like using lotion to wash your hair, so instead of removing the product, when you rinse it off, it just becomes impacted in your hair follicle.” She went on to say Kiddos, kiddos that we represent, have lost nearly all of their hair.”

A statement was released in reply that in summary stated: […] our customers’ overwhelmingly positive response to WEN is a testament to the benefits it can deliver for its users. These benefits are reflected in consistently high rankings from independent consumer product sites as well. Importantly, there is no scientific evidence to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to WEN hair products. We intend to vigorously contest the allegations made against our products. And, we encourage any customer with any questions to contact us.”
