What can your hair tell you about your health?
Not many know the scalp and generally their hair might be alerting them about some health issue. It has been found that a number of medications and conditions affect the body including the hair. Sometimes it’s just a reminder your scalp deserves better care. Minor or serious, the condition of your scalp deserves a second thought.
Dandruff is not dangerous
Dandruff is neither harmful nor infectious. Even doctors are not sure how people get it. Some believe it’s due to fungus that has probably overgrown. Dry weather, cold, having psoriasis or eczema, stress, oily skin and obesity are some of the risk factors associated with white flakes. Nonetheless, dandruff is an embarrassing condition. You can use an anti dandruff ointment or shampoo before rinsing your scalp with clean water to deal with it.
Seborrheic dermatitis
Sometimes the dandruff on your head might not be the usual type. It might be yellow and greasy, a case of seborrheic dermatitis. Essentially, seborrheic dermatitis is one of the inflammatory conditions of the skin occurring in areas either on the face or scalp full of oil glands. The inflammation is related to neurological issues, fungus and hormones, but treatment is not special from that of dandruff. Simply use antidandruff shampoos and you are good to go. In case of severe cases of the condition, antifungal and steroidal medicine could be prescribed.
Telogen effluvium
If the body system is jolted, for instance by thyroid complications, critical stress, crash diets, certain medications, giving birth or surgery, the hair could be pushed into a telogen state, or a resting position. Around 60 days later the hair might start thinning and falling out, which is a condition known as telogen effluvium. You might end up bald or new hair can start to grow straight away.
Hair follicles attack
Sometimes the immune system attacks your hair follicles in a condition known as alopecia areata, leading to a sudden loss of your hair. Many people with this condition end up with at most two bald areas; in serious cases every hair around the body falls out. While it’s neither contagious nor harmful, Alopecia areata can be a psychological tough nut to crack. While the hair could grow back without your involvement with some treatment motivating it to grow fast, many people will continue experiencing the condition recurrently. Scalp micropigmentation makes a lot of sense to those with the condition.
Male and losing hair? Blame your mother
Genes have been blamed for causing about 90 percent of hair loss in men. The trait might be hereditary but said to be influenced not by the father’s family but the mother’s. If your maternal grandfather had no hair or suffered hair loss, chances are you will be bald as well. Baldness in men follows a pattern of receding hair around the temples followed by the crown before leaving a ring the shape of a horseshoe around the head’s sides.
Scalp massage is heavenly
Massaging the scalp might not do something about your baldness or hair loss but very effective in relieving stress. Many nerve endings covering the scalp make it very sensitive to a simple stroke and rubbing it releases all the tension in your head. Scalp pigmentation offers a lot of possibilities such as a massage on a hairless scalp that sets off serotonin, dopamine and other feel-good hormones.
