Hair loss and middle age – is there still hope?
The sad fact is hair loss can occur at any age. It is most expected and seems almost normal in middle age, but for these exact same reasons, this sector of the population is given less attention than the younger sufferer when the concerns are just the same.
There is no doubt that younger person with hair loss are likely to suffer from a great deal of issues – both physical and psychological. As well as hiding the hair loss away, or hunting down effective treatments, they also have to contend with a society which considers thinning hair as a symptom of old age. As well as being unable to keep up with the latest hairstyles, they also tend to be treated as being outside their peers age group and so – in time – there is a danger they themselves begin to consider themselves as being outside their peers age group.
For the older man, the issues are still there but they are apparent in a slightly different way. For instance, as hair loss is socially acceptable in middle age, there is a danger the middle-aged man will become complacent with his lot so to speak. It isn’t such an issue for presentation and this may lead to a feeling of submission.
This is sad because it could well trigger a whole avalanche of feelings around compromising, giving up and just giving into what is subjectively considered in life as a period in life when nothing matters anymore. Who we see in the mirror determines, to a large extent, how we live our lives and how we perceive our futures. Once you give in the ravages of time you are on a downward slide. But you don’t have to.
The problems in effect are just the same. You are still in a peer group where you are likely to feel inadequate, restricted in how you present yourself and feel prematurely aging – and those feelings can lead to a battered confidence and a vulnerable self-esteem. Add to that that – inside spiritually, you may be giving up your aspirations, wild nights out, and ambitions, to cocoa, slippers, despondency and – well, you get the picture.
Hair loss is a surreptitious sign and signal that it is time to slow down and become complacent. In a world where advances in technological science has led to guys living on average until their mid-eighties this is so sad! You are almost giving up on half your life.
