Will my scalp micropigmentation last long for years?
One of the most common questions we hear from customers visiting our clinics is “how long does scalp micropigmentation last?” As it is a life-changing hair loss solution that will positively transform the way you look, it’s important to understand if this is a worthwhile investment.
Below we go into more detail about how long scalp micropigmentation lasts for and the various factors that determine its longevity.
Scalp micropigmentation basics
The first thing to note is that having the scalp micropigmentation treatment will not stop you losing your hair. Our trained technicians apply pigments to your scalp to replicate the look of a natural hairline. How long scalp micropigmentation will last depends on several different factors.
Remember, while scalp micropigmentation is a permanent hair loss solution, the pigment colours will become duller after a certain amount of years. While it will remain on the skin, it will fade over time and needs to be reinvigorated to bring out the best of the treatment.
Is Skalp® treatment permanent?
Yes, Skalp’s scalp micropigmentation treatment is classed as permanent.
Does scalp Micropigmentation fade?
Yes. Even permanent Scalp Micropigmentation treatment does fade. There are two types of fading that may occur. Firstly, as part of the healing process after each session. This is a natural part of the process and is why there are multiple sessions needed. Secondly, SMP may fade slightly over time to a lighter version of the finished result. Which is why we offer touch-up sessions at a set rate, you can see our treatment prices here.
How long does scalp micropigmentation last?
In general, we recommend that after the first treatment is completed you return to have touch-up sessions every 3 to 6 years. This might seem quite a broad period, but this is something we can advise on based on the specific condition of your treatment.
While there are some reasons why you may need to come in sooner rather than later, one of the biggest reasons the pigments start to fade is due to sun exposure. The more your scalp is exposed to UV rays, the faster the treatment will start to fade away.
Another reason why scalp micropigmentation may take longer than others to fade is due to the type of pigment applied. Naturally, some people will require darker tones than others which means the time it takes for it to lose vibrancy is often a little longer.
Your skin tone will also play a role in the length of time it takes for scalp micropigmentation to fade. People with darker skin tones may not require a top-up before those with lighter skin, as the colour fade may be less noticeable. Again, this is just a general rule and may differ from person to person.
How to make your SMP last longer
It goes without saying that you want to make your treatment last for as long as possible. Ideally, you would prefer to wait up to 6 years rather than having to return after 3 to top-up the treatment.
There are a few things you can do to help your scalp and to make scalp micropigmentation last longer:
- Try to avoid overexposure to the sun. This can cause dry, cracked skin as well as causing the pigments to fade out much faster.
- Where possible use a high factor sun cream on your scalp or wear a hat for protection.
- Moisturise the scalp once a day using a lightweight moisturiser.
- Use an exfoliating cleanser to help maintain the best skin results.
