As technology becomes a an integral part of every single part of our 21st century lives, there are few things now that cannot be completed at the push of a button. And now, hair transplants are about to join our forever expanding automatic mechanised services. Don’t worry, it hasn’t quite got to the point where you can download it free as an android app on your mobile phone, but scientists are of the opinion that the new techniques facilitated by a robot could well offer a much more efficient hair transplant service.
Still in its infancy, the first UK patient was last year. Now before your imagination starts working overtime, you are not about to get a R2-D2 hairdresser with a super-logical idea of the current fashion hairstyles, a positronic brain and a memory that is really a database the size of the milky way. This is simply automated machinery that allows a surgeon to be more efficient in preparing the hair transplant itself.
The benefits of a robot hair transplant
Surgeons are well behind the new robotic procedures – in fact they are already used in many parts of the world. Here are just some of the features that the robot has to offer:
- The capacity to harvest hair successfully without damaging the grafts at an increased rate of 50% in comparison to the hand method.
- Endurance is enhanced. The robot can deal with small and laborious actions for a long period of time where the surgeon would need to take breaks to keep up speed and accuracy.
- The robot can harvest 500 grafts per hour. This would be difficult for a human surgeon to do consistently over a long period of time.
- There is no linear scar created.
- Successful hair transplants are all dependent upon the quality of the hair graft (which is used to create the new hair growth). The robot, due to the fact that it has much more intricate movement, can provide high quality hair grafts all the time.
Still a need for the human touch
These points sound like great steps forward and technology is certainly making the world of hair transplantation more effective and faster. There will however still be a great need for surgeons and nurses to oversee the process to ensure that styles and hairlines are kept to what the patient requires. It is also unlikely to take away the one reason which prevents many individuals accepting the option of hair transplantation – the expense. If anything, where machinery such as this (and the training involved) needs initial investment, it may well increase prices.
