Wen hair cleansing product faces lawsuit in USA
Wen cleansing conditioner has been in the news for a long time now following complaints that rather than nurturing hair it can actually damage it. The Wen range which is managed by celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean and promoted as a great solution for the “non-shampoo” movement, is constantly hitting the headlines, but few realise that the issues stretch right back to 2010.
Complaints over 6 years
It was in 2010 that women primarily first started making the complaints which have grown and grown over the last 6 years and remain cohesive in the type of symptoms they describe. Clearly this is a long period of time for a product to remain on sale when there is a suggestion that it could in fact be dangerous to use, but as a representative of the US Food and Drink Administration (FDA) explained to ‘The New York Times’, there was very little they could do other than issue a safety alert.
Apparently the FDA does not have the power to recall cosmetics as it would with pharmaceutical products. On 19 July 2016, the FDA posted a notice stating that they were investigating “Adverse Event Reports” of “hair loss, hair breakage, balding, itching, and rash associated with the use of WEN by Chaz Dean Cleansing Conditioner products.”
A new lawsuit re hair loss claims
But now a group of 200 women who believe there has been damage caused by the product are banding together to bring a lawsuit against Chaz Dean inc. If successful, it could mean the cost of each bottle refunded to consumers who have bought it ($25) and up to $20,000 to each and every person who has experienced adverse effects. Complaints have been made about severe and possibly permanent damage to hair; bald spots, hair breakage, scalp irritation and rashes.
With any case that makes the headlines before the evidence is fairly heard in court it feels as if the Wen product range has already been found guilty but it needs to be remembered that it hasn’t. And there is still no clear scientific evidence that is available to link the product with the dangers it is supposed to trigger. Lawyers also feel this case will be going on a long time and it will not be finish in the short term.
