Is Scalp Micropigmentation Possible with Long Hair?
Experiencing problems with hair loss can happen for several reasons for men. Stress, health problems, diseases or illnesses and side effects from certain medications can all potentially cause minor to severe hair loss.
Choosing the right hair loss treatment can be difficult
We understand what it is like to be losing your hair. Due to the unpredictable behavior of hair loss, it can often be tricky to know severe the problem is. This is particularly true if stress or alopecia areata is the part of the cause or the root cause, as both conditions can behave in erratic ways making them almost impossible to manage. Of course, there is also androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness, which is the most common cause of hair loss and affects more than 60% of the male population at some point in their life.
Regardless of the reason, cause or severity of your hair loss, scalp micropigmentation is one of the best solutions available. Scalp micropigmentation ( or SMP ) has no known potential health or medical side effects. Besides, the procedure is performed in a relatively short timeframe so there is no need for patients to lose time at work or otherwise. There are no negative physical consequences to deal with immediately following a procedure and no downtime, so patients are free to continue with their normal daily activities.
Ensuring Your Situation Fits SMP
While scalp micropigmentation does offer many benefits and is the perfect solution for many situations, it is not a fit for everyone. SMP can be used in several different ways to handle a range of hair loss issues. The most common SMP treatment is for a shaved head, where the treatment mimics shaved hair follicles. However, scalp micropigmentation can also be used to add density to thin hair on the scalp for people with longer hair. This is often referred to as a ‘thickening treatment’ and does not require the patient to shave for the procedure. It still offers an excellent resolution for someone with longer hair, but there are circumstances to consider and the type of treatment depends on clients’ overall long-term goals.
Scalp micropigmentation is most often known for treating patients that have very short hair or the clients that are willing to adapt to the shaved head look. So is scalp micropigmentation possible with long hair? The answer is yes, SMP can be very effective for hiding hair loss with longer hair.
Scalp Micropigmentation with Long Hair
Scalp Micropigmentation with longer hair is usually applicable in situations with diffuse hair loss, or hair thinning which is often the case with male pattern baldness.
If you are interested in scalp micropigmentation and you have longer hair, then a few restrictions may apply. Those restrictions are:
- The treatment would need to stay within the natural hairline.
- There needs to be enough natural hair to provide at least a minimum base level of cover to blend with the treatment.
- Existing hair needs to be a dark brown or black color to match with the treatment.
If you can meet the requirements above, then SMP can provide excellent cover for areas that are thinning and offer a way to smooth and balance the visual appearance of a patient’s hair. If you are unsure if the restrictions above apply to you, don’t hesitate to contact Skalp who would be happy to help advise you. It is important to note, the effectiveness and long-term usefulness of SMP in these situations depends upon many factors.
Sometimes there can be a significant change in the thinning areas and spots become completely or almost completely bald. In this case, the contrast between the long natural hair and the pigments will become very noticeable. Additionally, the color of hair and type of hair you have can make a difference as well. It can sometimes be difficult to achieve a balanced visual integration if the hair color is extremely light-colored. Therefore it is not possible to achieve a natural thickening treatment for SMP on long hair for those with white, grey or very light blonde hair.

An Individual Consultation is the Only Way to Find Out
Due to the specific nature of cases when SMP is an effective treatment worth consideration, patients with longer hair need an individual consultation. A true evaluation is only effective if completed in-person when a provider has an opportunity to personally examine your complete situation.
In addition to having the opportunity to physically examine a patient’s situation, a provider should also discuss the many important long-term considerations. The results of SMP procedures on their own are very stable on a long-term basis.
