The amazing summer in the UK looks set to continue right through to the end of August. We all love the sun and most of us can’t wait to catch the tan that comes with it. However, for those who have had SMP treatment, you will also need to be thinking about protecting your scalp micropigmentation treatment in the sun.
Being out in the sun too long is not good for anyone, especially those who are bald or have receding hair. At Skalp we know there is no reason for you not to enjoy the sun as much as anyone else. So, read on to learn more about protecting your scalp micropigmentation and scalp from sun exposure to get the most out of this summer.
Why you need to protect your SMP treatment in the sun
The skin on your scalp needs to avoid sunlight for at least 21 days after receiving scalp micropigmentation. There are two main reasons for this:
Firstly, the skin will be more sensitive. Once the scabbing process has finish ed then the skin has more protection.
Secondly, just like regular tattoos, head tattoos can fade prematurely if exposed to the sun for long periods. If you’ve invested in the procedure for a brand new look, it makes sense to also follow our suggested SMP aftercare.
What are UV rays and how do they affect your scalp?
The sun emits a type of energy called Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is also the leading cause of skin cancer. Even though UV rays make up only a very small portion of the sun’s rays, they are the main cause of the sun’s damaging effects on the skin. Although we all love to tan, the darkening of our skin is, in fact, our body’s way of protecting our skin from UV rays.
Hair offers some, but not much, protection of the scalp from overexposure to the sun. UV rays can not only cause sunburn on the scalp but not using sunscreen on any part of your body can cause skin cancer. Which is why applying sunscreen after scalp micropigmentation is still extremely important.
When you need to use sunscreen after scalp micropigmentation
After your scalp micropigmentation treatment is completed and healing we advise customers not to apply any lotions or creams for at least 4 days. This is part of the SMP aftercare suggested by our practitioners.
Once fully healed you should think about UV protection for scalp micropigmentation. For any prolonged periods in the sun, such as going on holiday, long day trips or sunbathing, you should regularly apply sunscreen to your scalp.
What sunscreen products we recommend for SMP
Our suggested UV protection for scalp micropigmentation would be a sun cream with a high SPF. This should be at least 30+, but we recommend 50+ if possible. Hydrating sunscreens are also a great way to protect the treatment and keep the scalp in good condition.
Each of our practitioners can provide their own expertise when doing your treatment because they have all had scalp micropigmentation themselves. They recommend using La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Spray SPF50+ which helps keep the scalp in great condition. They also have anti shine sun care products.
Tips for looking after your scalp micropigmentation treatment in the sun
- Follow our SMP aftercare and allow at least 21 days after the treatment before exposing the scalp to sunlight.
- Think about your scalp micropigmentation and sun exposure before heading out for the day.
- If you are planning on being in the sun for long periods, always use sun cream for full protection.
- Use a 30+ or 50+ SPF sunscreen and remember to reapply it every 2/3 hours if out in the sun for a long time.
- If you are perspiring a lot, or your scalp is exposed to water, the sun cream will need to be reapplied to reinforce the protection of the skin.
